evaluation question 1

our storyline starts with two charity workers talking about how much they have raised however one of the workers is a twisted serial killer who ends up killing the other charity person for the pathetic reason of him raising more money and his thirst to kill. The genre of the film is crime horror we used inspiration from films such as 'reservoir dogs' as Alec the killer dances every time he kills somebody creating a sinister scene. We also used inspiration from films such as 'M' as the person hums a tune after killing someone this is where we took inspiration for our title too.

This scene is similar to the scene is reservoir dogs as the person is torturing someone while dancing to upbeat music in our film the killer is dancing to upbeat music after he has killed the victim.

This scene contrasts our film as the film 'gone baby gone' 2007  the scene where the mother is just being told her daughter has gone missing the mother does not seem to be bothered and has no reaction whereas in our film when the mother and sister find out about the murder on the news they have hug and cry showing that they care which contrasts the scene in 'gone baby gone'.

this is a scene from a film called 'psycho' this a graphic match which is fro an eye to a drawn to signify death and darkness. We have also used a graphic match in our film which is similar to this one as it also goes from an eye of the dead persons to a record player to signify that he enjoyed killing the person and they are celebrating.

Genre

horror crime-

Crime stories in this genre often highlight the life of a crime figure or a crime's victims. Or they glorify the rise and fall of a particular criminals, gang, bank robber, murderer or lawbreakers in personal power struggles or conflict with law and order figures, an underling or competitive colleague, or a rival gang. Headline-grabbing situations, real-life gangsters, or crime reports have often been used in crime films. Gangster/crime films are usually set in large, crowded cities, to provide a view of the secret world of the criminal: dark nightclubs or streets with lurid neon signs, fast cars, piles of cash, sleazy bars, contraband, seedy living quarters or rooming houses. Exotic locales for crimes often add an element of adventure and wealth. Writers dreamed up appropriate gangland jargon for the tales, such as "tommy guns" or "molls."

Film gangsters are usually materialistic, street-smart, immoral, meglo-maniacal, and self-destructive. Rivalry with other criminals in gangster warfare is often a significant plot characteristic. Crime plots also include questions such as how the criminal will be apprehended by police, private eyes, special agents or lawful authorities, or mysteries such as who stole the valued object. They rise to power with a tough cruel façade while showing an ambitious desire for success and recognition, but underneath they can express sensitivity and gentleness.

Gangster films are often morality tales: Horatio Alger or 'pursuit of the American Dream' success stories turned upside down in which criminals live in an inverted dream world of success and wealth. Often from poor immigrant families, gangster characters often fall prey to crime in the pursuit of wealth, status, and material possessions (clothes and cars), because all other "normal" avenues to the top are unavailable to them. Although they are doomed to failure and inevitable death (usually violent), criminals are sometimes portrayed as the victims of circumstance, because the stories are told from their point of view.

horror films often are unsettling films designed to frighten and panic, cause dread and alarm, and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while captivating and entertaining us at the same time in a cathartic experience. Horror films effectively centre on the dark side of life, the forbidden, and strange and alarming events. They deal with our most primal nature and its fears: our nightmares, our vulnerability, our alienation, our revulsions, our terror of the unknown, our fear of death and dismemberment, loss of identity, or fear of sexuality.  they often include gore, blood and murder and play on peoples nightmares or fears.

our film combines both of these genres in order to create a mystery murder in which the murder commits murder and breaks into someone's house and takes pride in what he has done.

Research possible distributor for our film

Possible distributor for our film

Universal

Ø  Universal Studios is an American film studio owned by Comcast through the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group division

Ø  The company was founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, Mark Dintenfass, Charles O. Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley, Robert H. Cochrane, and Jules Brulatour,

Ø  It is the 2nd oldest surviving film studio in the United States.

I researched into universal as a possible distributor for our film because it has had many successful horror films in the past such as ‘My Little Eye’ and ‘Candyman.’ However, it hasn’t recently brought out any horror films so our horror film could be a new revolutionary one which attracts a wide audience of universal’s previously released films.

Columbia pictures

Ø  Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. is an American film studio, production company and film distributor that is a member of the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, a division of Sony Entertainment's Sony Pictures subsidiary of the Japanese conglomerate Sony.

Ø   The studio was founded in 1918 as Cohn-Brandt-Cohn Film Sales by brothers Jack and Harry Cohn and Jack's best friend Joe Brandt

Ø  It released its first feature film in August 1922.

Ø  It adopted the Columbia Pictures name in 1924, and went public two years later.

I researched into Columbia pictures as a possible distributor for our film because it has also had many iconic and successful horror films such as ‘I know what you did last summer’ and ‘Zombieland.’ Therefore, our film could add to this success and the unique selling point of our film which is the symbolism of the murderers hum would help it to be even more successful.

Fritz Lang's "M" Sound Motif

In M they use a sound motif which shows the main character whistle, this is a big part as it is used to show when the character will strike and will then kill next. This is very similar to what we are doing in our film. We will be using a sound motif of the killer character will hum a sound as he strikes to kill his next victim which is similar to this film.

Rough Storyboard

Full storyline treatment

Full storyline treatment

Length of film is 2 hours
Title of film : Hum
Our chosen distributor is Universal

The certificate of our film is a 15 due to mild violence in the film, at the beginning a person is shown dead but the killing of the person is not shown. Mild scenes of blood and gore are shown as well as the use of drugs (cigarettes) however we show this mildly and do not heavily promote it.
The target audience for our film is 16-25 year olds because the main age range of cinema goers and people in that age range prefer horror/crime films.

Beginning
Our film starts in the setting of a house where a murderer has killed an innocent civilian, the victim is shown covered in blood and the murderer dances to music whilst remaining anonymous (the audience does not see his face.) The story hits the news immediately and the murder watches it back at home whilst the family of the victim also watch it.
Middle
More murders go on to be committed by the murderer, the audience can see the murderer but the audience can’t. The investigation into the murder of the victim is an ongoing process through all of the film.

End
The murderer is said to have been found and jailed which brings closure to the family. However, at the end of the film the actual murderer which the audience remembers is walking down the street humming the distinctive tune that the hummed after he committed all of his other murders.
